Adoption and judgment·2 min·Mauro Pinotti

The conditions digital change needs to move forward

When a digital initiative stalls, it helps to look at which conditions are missing for the change to be reasonable and feasible.

In digital adoption projects, many difficulties show up as confusion, anxiety, frustration, a lack of resources, a lack of agreement, or the absence of a clear plan.

Looking at those conditions helps you intervene more effectively.

Change depends on conditions

A person can agree with a new tool and still need help using it. They can understand the overall goal and still need clarity on what to do next Monday. They can want to learn AI and still need time to practice.

When we look at conditions, possible interventions come into view.

The six elements

For change to work, six elements usually need to be in place:

  1. Vision: understanding where you are going and why it matters.
  2. Consensus: real agreement, beyond formal approval.
  3. Skills: being able to do what is being asked.
  4. Incentives: having concrete reasons to act.
  5. Resources: having time, access, tools, and support.
  6. Action plan: knowing what the next steps are.

When one is missing, a distinct symptom appears.

Try it

The table lets you turn elements on or off to see what each missing one produces.

Every element is in place. The change has the conditions it needs to last.

What makes the framework useful

Its value lies in changing the conversation.

  • If vision is missing, provide direction.
  • If skills are missing, make room for practice.
  • If resources are missing, review time, access, and support.
  • If there is no plan, define the next steps.

Digital adoption improves when we name the missing conditions more precisely.

A question to start with

Before diagnosing attitudes, it helps to ask:

What would need to be in place for using this tool to be reasonable, feasible, and useful for the people who have to adopt it?

That question usually opens up concrete paths forward.
